Born in Hayes, Middlesex, the young Spencer James soon took a very active interest
in music, first by working for the renowned Marshall's Music Group at the tender age of
seventeen. This lead to an even more active role as a guitarist in local groups, soon
progressing to lead vocals and higher profile bands and more prestigious gigs.
The first real breakthrough came when Spencer 'depped' for WHITE PLAINS (My baby loves loving, When You Are A King etc). At this point his influences were Paul Carrack, Eric Claptori etc. With a taste for the high life, Spencer formed a band called DUKE which eventually became FIRST CLASS, and gave Spencer his first big hit with Beach Baby in 1974 (#13 U.K., #3 U.S.A.). This involved gigs all over the world, and many T.V. appearances (Top of the Pops, Lift off with Ayshia, and many continental shows).
This lead to the forming of, and a six week tour with, a supergroup called
NIGHTFLY (pictured right) (Zak Starkey (son of Ringo), Mick Moody (guitarist with Whitesnake) and
Boz Burrell (bass player for Bad Company) along with Spencer on lead vocals and guitar.
Although this was a great group musically it didn't take off quite as hoped, and when
The Searchers called offering the job vacated by Mike Pender, Spencer saw the chance to
play with the sixties legends as a good long term career move.
The workload over the following fifteen years has been phenomenal, and has include just about every prestigious gig in the world including Wembley Stadium (with Sir Cliff Richard), National Indoor Arena (millennium New Year with Sir Cliff), London Palladium, Royal Albert Hall, Madison Square Gardens, and tours of: Australia ,New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, U.S.A., Canada, Falklands, Europe, Aden, Middle East.
During this time Spencer had set up his own top quality recording studio (SJO MUSIC), and had been active recording and producing acts such as The Equals, The Searchers, Chippendales etc. This sparked his own solo recording career, culminating in the album 'Tides of Time', a collection of self and co-written songs. By this time Spencer was being heavily influenced by today's' great singers and writers in the country scene (Collin Raye, Steve Warmer, Mark Chesnutt etc.), and this resulted in the last album 'Love Remains'.
On Breathe In, Breathe Out Spencer is developing
his solo recording and playing career as time and Searchers schedules permit. The new upgraded studio he has had built has improved the sound quality of this album still further from the previously excellent Love Remains.
Make no mistake, Spencer James is definitely here to stay, both as a recording artist and a gigging musician.
